THE HON GREG COMBET AM MP Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency

GC 180/11 17 June 2011

Today an email was sent out to all GetUp! members from the GetUp! CEO Simon Sheikh.

The email contained factual inaccuracies.

Firstly, the email claimed that scheduled climate change negotiations between the Government, Greens and Independents didn’t happen today.

The fact is that the Government did meet with the Greens and Mr Windsor today. Mr Oakeshott was unavailable as he returned to his electorate because of the NSW floods.

Secondly, the email claimed that the Government was considering a price on pollution that doesn’t invest any money in renewable energy.

This is wrong.

The Government is committed to a carbon price that has environmental integrity, that achieves real cuts in pollution and drives investment in our clean energy future.

Investment in renewable energy will be critical to a clean energy future. This is something that has always been recognised by the Government.

My office contacted GetUp! today to correct the record. We were informed that they would not be issuing any correction to their email.

The Government recognises the hard work and commitment of GetUp! members to achieving a price on carbon - a commitment that is shared by the Government.

I would urge GetUp! to be more careful in the future and ensure that they check the accuracy of their communications to their members, who have a very legitimate interest in the current debate around a carbon price.
