Friday, 3 June 2011

Attorney-General Robert McClelland today announced the recipients of the second round of funding for the Native Title Anthropologist Grants Program, which aims to attract and retain anthropologists to native title work.

Mr McClelland said today’s announcement coincides with the National Native Title Conference 2011 being held in Brisbane today, which draws together anthropologists and other stakeholders to discuss current and emerging issues in native title.

“The Australian National University School of Archaeology and Anthropology, The Cairns Institute at James Cook University, the University of Sydney and two projects at the University of Adelaide have been selected for funding,” he said.

“Anthropologists are vital to the successful operation of the native title system, as Indigenous claimants rely on their expert evidence of connection to land to support applications.

“These applications best addressed the Program’s priority areas of need and benefit the native title anthropology sector as a whole.

“These projects will together provide a range of programs, including training for junior anthropologists, field work programs, fellowship placements and targeted study opportunities.”

The program seeks to fund projects that: • train and develop anthropologists to smooth the transition from study to native title field work, • undertake professional development, and support for anthropologists

working in the native title sector, and/or • strengthen linkages between academic and applied anthropological work.

The Australian Government has provided $1.4 million in funding over three years for this important program.

Today’s announcement coincides with Mabo Day which is commemorated on 3 June each year as the day native title was first recognised in Australia.
