Government must have contingency plans for evacuation from Egypt

Monday, 31 January 2011

The Prime Minister must ensure advanced contingency plans are in place to enable a rapid evacuation of Australians from Egypt if the situation further deteriorates.

There are reports that numerous countries are organising or planning evacuations of their citizens, including the United States, Canada, Iraq, Philippines, Pakistan, India and Turkey.

Australian officials in Egypt are best placed to advise on the timing of any evacuation and the government must heed their advice.

It is concerning to read reports from Australians in Egypt who feel threatened and are reporting a level of chaos among the thousands of people attempting to leave the country.

The Coalition sympathises with the democratic aspirations of the Egyptian people, and urges the protestors and the government to resolve the situation peacefully.
