Developments in Egypt

Friday, 11 February 2011

The protests in Egypt have entered a dangerous new phase and it is vital that any transition of power is orderly and achieved peacefully.

It is not in the interests of the Egyptian people, or rest of the world, for there to be a violent and chaotic transition of power.

The military have played an important role in maintaining order on the streets and that role has increased dramatically in importance in the wake of President Mubarak’s latest speech, in which he stated that he will not stand down from power prior to September elections.

The Coalition sympathises with the democratic aspirations of the Egyptian people, and urges the protestors and the government to resolve the situation peacefully.

It is vital that the Australian Government has developed plans for an urgent evacuation of all Australian citizens remaining in Egypt, including consular staff, if the security situation deteriorates dramatically.
