Detailed studies had revealed there as a definite need

for an alternate domestic jet airport In Central uaensiand,

the r'iinister for Civil Aviation, Lr. Swartz said today.

Mr. Swartz said the study had indicated Longreach as the

most logical choice for development.

However, A. Swartz said plans to develop Longreach

airport had yet to he considered by the Parliamentary :standing

Committee on Public Works and the Federal Government.

He said the development of Lon reach was aimed at

providing a runway and taxiway system capable of use as a

refueling stop for jet aircraft which might be employed on the

Brisbane - Mt Isa route in the future.

Although the decision to ev:lop a central Queensland

airport was primarily an air sfety recui r ement, of jr considerations

were its significance as a civil aviation focal point for the

general area and its potential to generate passenger and freight


hir. Swartz said if government ap_.roval was obtained,

lon;reach's runway would be strengthened and lengthened from

5,200 ft. to 7,000 ft. and a new taxiway and terminal apron construcLeda

The development would also include the installation of a

T-VASiS landing system and additional runway lighting.
