(Statement by the Minister for Civil Aviation, A;r. R.W. Swartz)

The Department of Civil Aviation will spend about

$980,000 on reinforcing the fire services at Sydney and Melbourne

Airports to meet the needs of the large Boeing 747.

Four ultra large 1500 gallon fire tenders will supplement

the Sydney Airport service and four more will be stationed at Melbourne

Airport. They will replace the existing 800 gallon large fire

tenders which will be diverted to other aerodromes.

Two satellite fire stations will also be established closer

to the southern end of the long north-south runways at Sydney and Melbourne.

The Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr. R. W. Swartz, announced

this today.

Mr, Swartz said that the new equipment would batik-up the existing

2,000 gallon ultra large water tenders at each airport to make total of

10,000 gallons of "mobile " water available for foam in an emergency.

He added that the Department proposed to establish the satellite

fire stations to keep to a mini um the time lapse between the alarm and

the arrival of the fire and rescue teams at an accident.

Mr. Swartz said similar fire service facilities for the 747

might be needed at Brisbane, Darwin and Perth Airports at a later date.
