(Statement by the ::±nister for Civil Aviation, Mr. R. W. Sws.rtz)

The Department of Civil Aviation is to instal 13 miles of

eonimmications and control cable underground at Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport.

This was announced today by the minister for Civil Aviation,

i' r. I. i. Swartz.

Mr. Swartz said that the cable was needed to connect the now

airways operations centre in the south-west corner of the airport with other

operations facilities and the international terminal.

Most of the cable network was concerned with the transfer of

operations from the old airways operations centre to the new building and

the rerouting of monitoring and control cables for navigational aids, radar,

instrument landing systems, and electrical power and generating equipment.

Cable connections between the new operations building and the

international terminal would also be needed for verbal and teletype communications

between the two centres.
