AUSTRALIAN TO LEAD IC AO C0: MISSION

Statement by the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr. R.W. Swartz

A senior Department of Civil Aviation officer has been elected

president of the Air Navigation Commission of the International Civil

Aviation Organisation.

He is Mr. L.C. Jacobe, 51, who was appointed a member of the

ICAO Commission in Montreal in 1966.

Mr. Jacobe is the second Australian to be elected president

of the Commission since Australia became a member in 1963.

The 12-man Commission is responsible on a world-wide basis for

the planning and co-ordination of all ICAO's work in the air navigation

field.

W. Jacobe, D.F.C., and Par served in the RAAF as a bomber pilot

with No. 109 Squadron and with the Pathfinder force in Britain. He joined

D.C.A. in. 1949•

He was appointed Superintendent, Operational Standards in 1964

before taking up his post with ICAO in 1966. He is married with three

c.a.ughters.
