KELVIN THOMSONMedia Release from the Shadow Minister for Environment & HeritageThomson calls for National Park, not more Portsea propertyKelvin Thomson, Labor’s Shadow Environment Minister has today joined withformer Premiers Joan Kirner and Dick Hamer to call on the Federal Government toensure that Defence Department land at Point Nepean is not bulldozed for privatedevelopment. It is important that the 311hectares of surplus Defence land at Point Nepean is notturned into real estate for more private development. The rally at Parliament House,Spring Street today at 12 noon will see the community voice that opinion. The land lies right in the middle of a National Park and has many important heritagevalues. The coastline and bushland here is one of great importance and it should bepreserved. The idea of making a park here is a sensible one and it is receiving widespreadsupport from the local community. Given the wide support it is up to Governments towork together to make the project a reality. The first step in saving the park is extending the time for consultation on the masterplan developed by consultants, PPK. The community has been given till the end ofOctober to respond but more time is needed. The community are intent on developinga professional response to the plan and I have written to Defence Minister Robert Hillurging that they be given the time to make that a reality. The Victorian Government has, not unreasonably, raised the important issue of theland’s contamination with unexploded ordinances. This issue needs to be resolved before the land can be transferred to the StateGovernment. But it is essential that ultimately this land is transferred to the State aspart of the Mornington Peninsula National Park.We can save this land from housing and conserve a unique area for years to come forour children. For Further Information: Kelvin Thomson MP Phone: 03 9350 5777 Mobile: 0419 594882Mr Thomson will be speaking at the rally.
