Organ Donors Needed

This month, the Australian Organ Donor Register will be the focus of a campaign to increase participation rates across the nation.

Over five million Australians have registered their intent to participate in the Organ Donor program and soon, all households in the Redlands will receive information about the Australian Organ Donor Register and how they can participate.

The mailout is a joint initiative of the government and the Pharmacy Guild of Australia and is supported by the Australian Division of General Practice. It follows the decision by Australian Health Ministers earlier this year to change the Australian Organ Donor Register from a register of intent to one of consent. The change takes effect from 1 July 2005.

Dr Laming said, “We are asking Australians, including the five million who are already on the Donor register, to strengthen their intent to a registration of consent. This legal consent makes it easier to ensure people’s wishes in regards to organ donation are respected.

“Organ donation has always received tremendous support from the Australian public. We are now seeking your help for this current registration drive.”

Information about the Australian Organ Donor Register can be gained by visiting your local Medicare Office, via the web on or freecall 1800 777 203.
