MEDIA RELEASE SF/68. Friday June 16, 2006

FAMILY FIRST opposes special treatment for politicians with donations to political parties being tax deductible.

This is just a money grab by politicians and political parties feathering their own nests.

Today, the Parliament will debate legislation to increase the tax deductible amount for political donations from $100 to $1500 - a 1500 per cent increase!

FAMILY FIRST will move an amendment to ABOLISH tax deductibility status for political parties.

Charities enjoy tax deductibility status and so they should.

However political parties are not a charity. They are self-interested organisations pushing their own agendas.

Community groups and lobby groups which push political agendas are not eligible for tax deductibility status.

So why should politicians and political parties be treated differently?

This is yet another example of hypocrisy; one rule for us politicians and political parties and another for everyone else.

(The legislation being debated is called the Electoral and Referendum Amendment (Electoral Integrity and Other Measures) Bill 2005 )
