$5,400 from the Federal Government’s Natural Heritage Trust will go towards protecting a rare un-named orchid found in the Chain Valley Bay area.

“This funding will enable the National Parks and Wildlife Service to protect this rare plant in the Chain Valley Bay area,” Senator John Tierney said.

“This is the fifth year the Natural Heritage Trust has funded local community groups for on-ground works to help achieve sustainable agriculture and conserve Australia’s unique natural heritage.”

Uncontrolled vechicular activity in the Chain Valley Bay portion of Lake Macquarie State Recreation Area is resulting in significant erosion and threatens an extremely rare un-named orchid (Genoplesium sp.).

Fencing will be erected to exclude unauthorised vehicles. Simple erosion controls would be installed to slow flows and trap sediment and revegetate by direct seeding and planting of local native plants. Managements trails will be upgraded to control erosion and prevent further damage. An interpretation program will be developed and implemented to encourage passive recreation in the area. A sense of community ownership will be encouraged with regular community activities.

“This is all about local environmental groups taking control of the problems in their area and finding local solutions,” Liberal Candidate for Shortland Brian Perrem said.

“The actions that groups such as the National Parks and Wildlife service take today, will benefits future generations through the improved management of the Chain Valley Bay area.”
