KELVIN THOMSON Media Release from the Shadow Minister for Regional Development and Roads, Shadow Minister for Housing and Urban Development

20 February 2005

GOVERNMENT MUST SCRAP REGIONAL PARTNERSHIPS PROGRAM

The Howard Government must scrap the now discredited Regional Partnerships Program and invest the remaining program funds in regional infrastructure.

There is around $280 million yet to be committed under this $408 million program.

This money must be committed to addressing Australia’s critical long-term regional infrastructure needs, not more pork barrelling in marginal Coalition electorates.

The Howard Government’s failure to adequately invest in infrastructure over recent years now threatens future economic growth.

Regional funding should build a future for regional Australia, not buttress the declining political fortunes of the Coalition’s junior partner in the bush, the National Party.
