PETER McGAURAN MP Commonwealth Minister for Science

Media Release

March 27, 2003

A group of Australian scientists will oversee the evaluation of the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) programme now underway, Science Minister Peter McGauran said today.

Mr McGauran said the steering group would reflect the broad range of stakeholder interests in the programme.

In addition to members from the Departments of Education, Science and Training, and Industry, Tourism and Resources, the steering committee consists of:

Dr Geoffrey Vaughan - Chairman of the CRC committee

Dr Tony Peacock - CRC Association

Prof Ron MacDonald - Convenor of the AV-CC’s committee of Deputy Vice-Chancellors and ProVice Chancellors dealing with research

Dr Paul Donaghue - Research manager in industry

Mr McGauran said consultancy firm Howard Partners had been selected to conduct the evaluation of the CRC programme.

"This evaluation is vital to appraise the CRC programme’s outstanding achievements during the past 12 years and, more importantly, explore where we can take it in the ever-evolving science arena," Mr McGauran said.

The CRC programme brings together universities, research organisations, government agencies and industry to support research, development and education activities that produce outcomes of national economic and social significance.

The evaluation is expected to be completed mid-year and will help develop arrangements for the next CRC selection round.
