Premier to Join Celebrations for Kaurna Elder

21 March 2002

Statement by ATSIC SA Zone Commissioner Brian Butler

The 90th birthday celebrations tomorrow for Kaurna Elder Doris Graham are cause for celebration within the whole SA Aboriginal community and represent yet another milestone in the life of this remarkable woman.

The fact that civic, political and community leaders are joining with the local Aboriginal community in the Adelaide Town Hall on Friday night to celebrate this milestone shows just how special Doris has been to so many people.

She has been a fighter for her people, on first name terms with a string of South Australian Premiers over the years and an inspiration to generations of young Aboriginal people who have gone on to be leaders within the community.

Because of the statistically lower life expectancy of our people it is significant that one of our elders has reached 90.

On behalf of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission I congratulate Doris on her contribution to Aboriginal Affairs in SA.

Doris Graham was born at Pt Pearce mission on Yorke Peninsula on 28 March 1912. In 1848 her great grandfather Tom Adams (originally Sir Roger Tichbourne before he changed his name) received permission from the then Governor of South Australia, Governor Robe to marry Aboriginal woman Kudnarto. This was the first legal black and white marriage recorded in SA.The Graham family has had a major impact on the sporting field in SA. Son Michael Graham played 270 SANFL games for Sturt Football Club including two premierships, kicked 442 goals and played 12 State games. Grandson Colin Graham was only 17 when he played his first VFL game for Melbourne Football Club and in1978 polled fifth in the Brownlow Medal.

Note to Editors - Premier Rann will attend from 6.30 to 7.15 p.m.
