‘Nuisance’ Tariffs

The Minister for Industry, Science and Tourism, John Moore, has released a list of 2,141 tariff items for immediate review.

The list ranges from ‘parts for microwave ovens’ to ‘plastic puzzles’.

Individually, these tariff lines account for revenue of less than $100,000 a year. So they raise little revenue and provide little or no protective benefit to Australian industry.

On the contrary, in many cases they simply add to the administrative and compliance costs that business faces.

In short, they could be described as ‘nuisance tariffs’.

The Minister will write to relevant industry organisations seeking their feedback on the options for reform with respect to these tariff lines.

Depending on the outcome of this process of consultation, the Minister will prepare a proposal for the consideration of the Government to remove at least some of the tariff items identified on this list.
