The Australian Labor Party today welcomed the appointme nt of the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ campaign committees for this November’s referendum on the Republic.

“Now that these appointment have been made, the campaign committees can get on with the job of putting the arguments for and against change before the Australian people,” said the Shadow Attorney General, Robert McClelland.

“The Australian Labor Party looks forward to this exchange of views and hopes that the campaign will be fought in the finest traditions of Australian democracy.

“The Labor Party has every confidence that the ‘yes’ campaign committee will do an excellent job in explaining to the Australian people the need for an Australian Head of State.

“We wish them every success.

“That said, the Australian Labor Party is disappointed that Mr Howard did not extend the common courtesy of consulting with other political parties before selecting their representatives on the ‘yes’ campaign committee, as he did for delegates to the Constitutional Convention.

“However, we congratulate Gareth Evans on his selection. Mr Evans is an excellent choice and is eminently suitable for the task at hand. We know that he will be an invaluable asset to the ‘yes’ campaign committee. He naturally enjoys our full support.”
