Media Release Dr Michael Wooldridge Minister for Health and Aged Care

MW94/00 23 October 2000

Beyond Blue: Turning ideas into actions Federal Health Minister Michael Wooldridge today announced that the National Depression Initiative had become a legal company called Beyond Blue.

"Charged with tackling the destructive forces of depression in Australia, Beyond Blue will take a leading role - through partnerships with all sectors of the community - in education, prevention, treatment and management of this crippling illness," Dr Wooldridge said. "Beyond Blue will turn the Depression Initiative's ideas into actions." The World Health Organisation has predicted that by the year 2020 depression will be the world's second largest health problem behind heart disease. Depression is a major cause of illness and disability in Australia. In any given year, almost 800,000 Australian adults will experience a depressive illness. "I am confident that with Beyond Blue we now have the right people on board and the right infrastructure in place to make significant progress in the fight against depression," Dr Wooldridge said. The Commonwealth Government has committed $17.5 million dollars over five years to tackling depression through Beyond Blue. This money has been matched by the Victorian Government with contributions also from Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the ACT.
