Fiji: Arrest Of George Speight Laurie Brereton - Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs

Media Statement - 27 July 2000

The Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Laurie Brereton, today welcomed the arrest of Fiji coup leader George Speight and a number of his supporters and associates.

"This is the best news from Suva since the release of the hostages", Mr Brereton said.

"Speight and his supporters are terrorists and criminals who must be dealt with the full weight of the law."

"Whilst the arrests are a positive step, the Interim Government and Military should be left in no doubt that much more is required to restore the rule of law and democratic processes in Fiji."

"There is only one satisfactory resolution to Fiji's crisis, and that is a prompt and peaceful return to democracy and a non-discriminatory political system."

"Until then, sanctions should remain in place and Fiji will remain an international outcast."
