Bob Brown's Senate Page

19 January 2001

TUCKEY: CHAINSAWS IN TASMANIA'S NATIONAL PARKS A paper distributed in Tasmania by the Federal Minister for Forestry and Conservation, Wilson Tuckey, advocates 'managed' logging and burning of national parks and forest reserves, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

He claims to be taking his cues from the US forest service but in fact has commercial interests in mind.

"The Howard government sees Tasmania's protected forests as open game", Senator Brown said.

'We're reducing resource opportunities by locking up forests in national parks', Mr Tuckey told the logging industry in NSW last October.

"His log and burn plan for national parks is thin cover for the woodchip industry's wish to get in there and make a quick dollar at everyone else's expense", Senator Brown said.
