Malcolm Turnbull Delivers Connections WJ Craig Lecture

Thursday, November 24, 2005

Malcolm Turnbull MP, Federal Member for Wentworth, tonight delivered the annual Connections WJ Craig Lecture at the Melbourne Town Hall. Connections supports vulnerable and disadvantaged children and families in Melbourne.

A full transcript of the speech is available in the speeches section of this website.

Mr Turnbull concluded "However the most compelling argument for reform is neither economic, nor financial. All of us know that the best form of welfare is a job and in addition to the income, the self-respect and confidence it brings, as opposed to the diminishing confidence and lack of self-worth of the long term welfare recipient.

But these changes, important though they are, are only part of the solution. It is unlikely that legislation will play the major role, if any role at all, in stemming the decline in marriage. Urban planning, as we have seen, is also an essential element. Every area of policy has the potential to increase, or diminish, the opportunities for the disadvantaged. I hope that your experience and insights can be brought to inform policy making in all these areas."
