Government releases the inaugural Industry Outcomes and Outlook Statement

The Minister for Industry, Science and Resources, Senator Nick Minchin, today released the inaugural Industry Outcomes and Outlook Statement (IOOS) at the CEDA State of the Nation Conference in Canberra.

The IOOS is an election commitment the Government made in September 1998 and forms part of the Government’s strategy for developing industries of the future. It is a component of the Australian Industry 2010 initiative outlined in the Making Industry Stronger election policy statement.

“The 1999 IOOS outlines the Governments industry achievements and the outlook, and highlights future industry policy priorities,” Senator Minchin said.

“These priorities include developing an ideas-based economy, encouraging innovation and R&D, fostering international competitiveness and exports, promoting regional investment, and formulating and implementing energy policy.”

The IOOS covers a range of industries in the manufacturing, services and resources sectors. In particular, it contains detailed discussion on the industries of automotive, biotechnology, coal and minerals, information technology and telecommunications pharmaceutical space, and textiles, clothing and footwear.

“A key message of the IOOS is that Australia has moved beyond relying on ‘quarries and beaches’,” Senator Minchin said. “We now have a diversified industrial base, with strong manufacturing and resources sectors and a vibrant services sector.

“The IOOS provides vital information to assist business, including potential investors, and State and Territory Governments to plan for the year ahead.”

The IOOS can be accessed through the Department of Industry, Science and Resources website at along with a detailed compendium of the 1999 key industry outcomes and outlook.
