Media Release DavidHawkerMP Federal Member for Wannon

11 June 2004

All major centres in the region have recorded falls in unemployment numbers.

The monthly figures relate to the number of people receiving the Newstart and Youth Allowances.

Portland recorded the largest drop with eleven fewer people receiving the allowances.

Member for Wannon - David Hawker - said it was pleasing that the fall in jobless numbers was fairly uniform across the region.

“These figures are good news and I have no doubt they are directly linked to strong economies, both nationally and in our own region,” Mr. Hawker said.

“Reserve Bank Governor, Ian Macfarlane, told my Parliamentary economics committee last week that he expected the economy to remain strong for some time.

“This gives real optimism that our jobless rate will continue to fall.”

Mr. Hawker said he was delighted the nation’s jobless rate was at a 23-year low and locally was around half that recorded when Labor lost office in 1996.
