DEMOCRATS MEDIA 04/364 MONDAY 10 MAY 2004 SENATOR ANDREW BARTLETT LEADER OF THE AUSTRALIAN DEMOCRATS & SPOKESPERSON ON DEFENCE Democrats initiate urgency motion on Iraqi prisoner abuse The Australian Democrats will tomorrow initiate an urgency motion in the Parliament on the issue of abuse of Iraqi prisoners. Democrats' leader, Senator Andrew Bartlett said he would expect the Senate to take a strong stand of condemnation of the abuse of prisoners and call for those responsible to be brought to justice. Senator Bartlett said the Parliament's first priority on sitting this week should be to make clear the Australian Senate's opposition to the mistreatment of prisoners. "We can't trust the Prime Minister to pursue this issue with the President of the United States when he visits there soon, so it is important the Australian Senate takes a strong stand," he said. "There will be opportunities in question time and estimates later this month to expose whether the Government had been aware of claims of abuse of Iraqi prisoners," Senator Bartlett concluded.
