NEW AUS'T'RALIAN AMBASSADOR TO THAILAND

The Minister for External Affairs (Mr. Paul Hasluck) announced

today the appointment of Mr. David Williamson McNicol, C.B.E., as Australian

Ambassador to Thailand. Mr. McNicol would also be Council Representative

for Australia to the South Nast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO).

Mr. McNicol, who was born in 1913, was educated at Kings College,

Adelaide, and the University of Adelaide. He joined the South Australian

Education Department in 1935. After war service as a pilot with the RAAF

from 1940 to 1945 9 he joined the Department of External Affairs in 1946.

Mr. McNicol served in Tokyo and Washington before being appointed in 1955 as Australian Minister to Cambodia, Laos and Viet—Nara. In 1957, he attended the Imperial Defence College in London. Since then, he has been

Australian Commissioner in Singapore from 1958 to 19609 Australian High Commissioner in Pakistan from 1962 to 1965, and Australian High Commissioner in New Zealand from December 1965 until March this year.
