Measures in Support of Environmentally Friendly ICT

Special Minister of State, Senator Eric Abetz today announced the key findings of a Government report into the impact of Information, Communication and Technology [ICT] development on the environment, detailing the critical steps government agencies and private enterprise will adopt to limit future impacts.

The report, compiled by Australian Government Information Management Office [AGIMO], is a response to a Government discussion paper instituted in 2004, which called for a ‘refreshed’ approach to the issue of balancing commercial activity, with the Government’s commitment to environmental issues.

“The report notes that there are already significant Australian Government and ICT industry activities in this area. Since the discussion paper was released in 2004, both industry and government have progressed several existing and new initiatives, in the management of e-waste and environmentally friendly procurement,” said Minister Abetz.

This report introduces further activities, which will be taken forward by AGIMO including:

Creating a better practice checklist to support Australian Government agencies in their

efforts to address environmental impacts from their use of ICT Introducing environmental considerations in ICT sourcing options, procurement and

contracting to improve value-for-money from Australian Government agencies’ investment in ICT Including environmental considerations, such as product energy efficiency, design,

recycling and reuse practices of the supplier, in the next edition of The Guide to ICT Sourcing for Australian Government Agencies
