No Crisis in Universities: Howard Michael Lee - Shadow Minister for Education

Media Statement - 8 August 2001

The Prime Minister made it clear in Question Time today that Australia's universities would receive no assistance from a re-elected Howard Government.

Mr Howard demonstrated a dangerous ignorance of the serious situation when he told the House of Representatives:

"There are more resources going into universities, there are more people attending universities …so any suggestion that there is some kind of crisis in universities is a complete falsehood." ●

This wrong and blinkered view will send a chill through all Australians who care about our universities and understand their importance to Australia's future.

It is hard to believe that the Prime Minister is so out of touch.

Mr Howard claims that universities have more resources.

He doesn't say that his government is providing $608 million less to universities in 2001 than they received in 1996. ●

Mr Howard says that there are more people attending universities.

He doesn't say (or know?) that there were fewer Australians at university in 2000 than there were in 1999 - though there were more overseas students. [Source: DETYA] ●

When it comes to Australian universities this Prime Minister doesn't know and he doesn't care. Authorised by Geoff Walsh, 19 National Circuit, Barton ACT 2600.
