Senator Bob Brown Senator for Tasmania Call for Governments to reveal money for Gunns

27th Oct 2005

On the occasion of Gunns Ltd’s annual general meeting, Greens Senator Bob Brown has called for revelation of how much public funds is being pumped into the giant woodchip company.

“There are two major siphons from the public purse to Gunns. The first is direct funds injection. The company, and more so the Prime Minister, should tell the public how much of the $250 million industry

assistance in this year’s forests package is going to Gunns.

Secondly, there should be audit of the massive indirect subsidy to Gunns through Forestry Tasmania’s provision of planning, road building and plantation establishment, all to benefit Gunns’ near monopoly on export woodchipping,” Senator Bob Brown said.

Senator Brown said that in terms of job creation in Tasmania the statistics show this money would be for better spent on tourism, hospitality and specialty agriculture.

Senator Brown released a discussion paper on Gunns by research assistant Greg Buckman (see attached).
