Boost for Bingil Bay business

Paradise Wines Pty Ltd in Bingil Bay, north Queensland, will receive a $33,000 scholarship from the Federal Government to help commercialise a banana-based table wine, National Party Senate Leader Ron Boswell announced today.

Scholarships are provided through the Government's New Industries Development Program (NIDP) which aim to help small-medium sized agribusinesses enhance the rate of commercialisation of new niche products, technologies or services.

"I commend Paradise Wines for its innovative use of otherwise discarded 'banana seconds' to produce a banana table wine using the latest technology in winemaking," Senator Boswell said.

"This federal scholarship will enable the business to undertake training courses, participate in trade shows and conferences, or other in-market research related to the commercialisation of new opportunities for their niche product."

Senator Boswell said the Federal Coalition Government established the scholarships to help build the management skills of some of the leading innovators in Australian agribusiness and help them capture new market opportunities.

The five year NIDP is a key element of the Government's Backing Australia's Ability initiative and aims to assist more than 200 Australian agribusinesses by the time it winds up in 2006.

Senator Boswell said the wide range of initiatives being funded under the NIDP highlights the increasing diversification and innovation taking place in Australian agribusiness.

Eight Queensland agribusinesses are among 22 Australia-wide to receive grants and scholarships totalling $1.09 million under the latest round of the program.
