CANBERRA INNOVATOR CREATES NEW BANDAGE TO MEND ANIMALS An innovative bandage designed specifically for the animal world is one of the latest ACT projects to receive funding in the Australian Government’s monthly round of innovation grants.

Federal Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane today announced a $64,000 Commercialising Emerging Technologies (COMET) grant for Canberra-based company Ezi Bandage as part of a national funding round worth more than $5.9 million for 27 innovative projects across Australia.

“The inspiration for the Ezi Bandage product came from company founder and part-time horse breeder, Dr Annette Cordell, who was frustrated by the difficulties she faced in bandaging her horses,” Mr Macfarlane said.

“From the shortcomings of difficult-to-apply traditional bandaging, the ‘Ezi Bandage’ was born - a water resistant, easy-to-affix veterinary dressing that even offers thermal qualities for animals.”

“It’s a great example of practical Australian ingenuity overcoming an everyday problem - and the Australian Government is pleased to help bring the product to the marketplace and achieve its commercial potential.”

COMET funding will be used to develop a business plan, conduct market research, protect intellectual property and undertake working prototype activities.

A second Canberra company, Booksafe Pty Ltd, was also awarded a $64,000 COMET grant in the latest round of innovation funding to help commercialise a secure, off-site back-up system for financial data.

“Booksafe software offers a more efficient and secure way of transferring, securing and managing a firm’s financial information,” Mr Macfarlane said.

“COMET funding will be used for mentoring and management development activities, business planning, market research, intellectual property and a working prototype.”
