MEDIA RELEASE SENATOR THE HON ROBERT HILL Minister for Defence Leader of the Government in the Senate

Tuesday, 22 March 2004 58/2004

Defence Minister Robert Hill took to the skies over Canberra today to promote the success of the Royal Australian Air Force’s latest recruitment efforts.

Senator Hill flew in the RAAF Hot Air Balloon, which is one of the oldest and slowest forms of aviation as well as one of the most successful Air Force promotions assets.

“The Balloon provides a great way for the Air Force to get out to visit parts of Australia not normally visited by major Australian Defence Force assets and has proved a popular attraction at major regional events,” Senator Hill said.

“Combined with more traditional recruitment methods, the Balloon has helped generate interest from more and more young Australians in both the Royal Australian Air Force and the Australian Defence Force as a challenging and viable career choice.

“Almost 5,000 committed Australians have joined the Australian Defence Force this financial year.

“The January 2004 Australian Defence Force Academy recruitment campaign achieved great results, with 100 per cent of the Air Force target being met. 93 young people were appointed this year to study to become pilots, navigators, air traffic controllers, administrators and engineers to name a few.

“The Air Force has also been successful with other avenues of officer entry, achieving 93 per cent overall and enlisted recruitment achieving over 95 per cent of the target numbers.”

Senator Hill said the Special Forces Direct Recruitment Scheme launched last October had also been a huge success. One hundred percent of targets have been reached for intakes in January and March 2004, with the May 2004 intake also fully subscribed.

“With over 800 Special Forces candidates still in the recruiting pipeline, it’s highly likely that the targets for the next financial years will also be met,” Senator Hill said.
