The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Fran Bailey, today announced three new Army training facilities at Lavarack Barracks in Townsville worth $9.1 million will commence construction shortly.

The three new projects are • The Combat Training Centre - Live Simulation, Range Instrumentation and Information System. ($2.8m. Invitation to Register (ITR) issued 21 February). • The Helicopter Underwater Escape Training ($2.5 million. ITR issued 6 March). • The Flexible Learning Centre - North Queensland ($3.85m).

“The Combat Training Centre will support a state-of-the-art combat training system. This forms a key component of realistic combined arms training, which supports the operational capability of Defence,” Fran Bailey said.

“The Helicopter Underwater Escape Training facility will allow the training of personnel in helicopter underwater escape techniques. The training conducted in this facility will prepare our soldiers to react if they were involved in a helicopter accident over water.”

The Member for Herbert, Peter Lindsay MP, welcomed today’s announcement as another example of the Federal Government’s continual investment in our Defence Forces.

“The Flexible Learning Centre will use leading technology to provide individual learning for training and professional advancement requirements for Defence Force personnel,” Peter Lindsay said.

“The $9.1 million program for construction of new training facilities at Lavarack Barracks will create fantastic opportunities for local businesses to benefit from the multi-million dollar investment.”

The three new projects are scheduled for completion by November 2004, February 2005 and June 2005 respectively. Lavarack Barracks houses 3rd Brigade and supporting units.
