Shadow Minister for Justice and Customs Manager of Opposition Business in the Senate Labor Senator for Queensland

11 August 2005

Shadow Minister for Justice Joe Ludwig today said Labor welcomed new national restrictions that would ensure Pseudoephedrine would only be available for sale over the counter at pharmacies.

Pseudoephedrine is the key ingredient in the manufacture of methamphetamine, which is found in many cold and flu medications.

Senator Ludwig said the importance of combating the illicit Pseudoephedrine trade was highlighted by last night’s seizure of more than 100,000 tablets of the drug in his home state of Queensland.

Senator Ludwig said the Australian Customs Service and the Australian Federal Police deserved to be congratulated for their work which led to the seizure of more than 100,000 tablets containing the prohibited drug Pseudoephedrine.

Senator Ludwig said the seizure came as a result of the combined efforts of the AFP and the Customs container screening program which Labor supports.
