Friday 14th March 2008

Greens welcome Welfare to Work overhaul The Australian Greens today welcomed the Governmentʹs move to overhaul the  welfare to work rules for single parents.    “Single mothers have suffered enormously under welfare to workʹs punitive  measures. The $25‐better‐off commitment in particular was always ridiculous and  should be scrapped,” said Senator Rachel Siewert.    “However, we urge the government to also ensure that the welfare system is no  longer a punitive and degrading experience for those in need.”     “With all the Governmentʹs rhetoric on skills and education being vital for increased  productivity, it follows that the rules which have been forcing single mothers to give  up their studies in fields such as education and nursing should also be scrapped as  part of this overhaul,” said Senator Siewert.    “I have heard too many stories from distressed single mothers desperately trying to  educate themselves while looking after their children and having to deal with the  arbitrary nature of welfare to work,” she said.    The Greens are also calling on the Government to extend the JET programme  allowing single parents who are studying access to subsidised childcare for the  length of their studies.     “The Government needs to recognise the importance of the JET programme in  helping single mothers. It makes no sense for single mothers who want to further  their education and enter the workforce to be cut off part way through their studies,  which is what is happening under the JET programme” she concluded.
