Australians urged to contribute to National Heritage List

The Australian Minister for Environment & Heritage, Senator Ian Campbell is today calling for nominations to the National Heritage list.

"Anyone can nominate a place to the National Heritage List through the public nomination process that is being advertised nationally today," Senator Campbell said.

"The National Heritage List records the natural, Indigenous and historic places with outstanding heritage value to our nation.

"These places will have values or characteristics that have special meaning for all Australians. They will show important aspects of the history of the continent in which we live, and will reflect the diverse range of Australia's national identity."

Senator Campbell said places on the National Heritage List were protected under the Coalition Government's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

"The National Heritage List ought to include the nation's most outstanding natural, cultural and Indigenous places and stories that make our country distinctively Australian. These are the things that make us feel proud of our amazing country.

"Some of the first places listed are well known landmarks, such as Captain Cook's landing place on the Kurnell Peninsular in Sydney and the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne, while others are more remote such as the Dinosaur Stampede National Monument located at Lark Quarry Conservation Park south of Winton in central Queensland and the Budj Bim National Heritage Landscape in the Tyrendarra Area in Victoria.

"I urge all Australians to identify the places of importance in their local areas and to consider making a nomination to the National Heritage List," Senator Campbell said.

Nominations should be submitted by 27 October 2004 and may be forwarded in writing to:
