Senator Ian Macdonald

Minister for Regional Services,

Territories and Local Government

A new Youth category within the National Awards for Innovation in Local Government will be established in response to a recommendation from the Lifestyle Group of the National Youth Roundtable the Minister for Regional Services Territories and Local Government, Senator Ian Macdonald, announced today.

“The category will be to acknowledge leading practice at the Local Government level in innovative projects designed to improve youth representation or to address youth lifestyle needs,” Senator Macdonald said.

“This announcement follows from a very practical and constructive recommendation by the Youth Round Table today - a recommendation that I am more than pleased to implement commencing the next awards in the year 2000.”

The National Awards for Innovation in Local Government is a Federal Government initiative funded under the Local Government Incentive Programme.

Senator Macdonald said that many councils had already embarked on projects to improve youth representation on local government issues, and to develop policies meeting youth needs, but that it was timely to recognise that more could be done.

“Not all of the issues that arose are easy nor short term fixes, however, the suggestion to provide an incentive to' Councils to address some of these issues was appropriate, and I am very happy to make an immediate decision to make that suggestion a reality.”

“I agree with the Roundtable that where local government organisations set an outstanding example in addressing youth issues they deserve national recognition in the hope that other councils will follow suit.”
