Tributes for Justice James Muirhead

“I note with regret the death of Justice James Muirhead,” the acting chair of ATSIC, Ray Robinson, said tonight.

“He was a decent man, whose role in initiating the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and the recommendations he made place him among the most important people who have dealt with Indigenous issues.”

ATSIC Commissioner Colin Dillon, who has portfolio responsibility for monitoring the implementation of the Royal Commission’s final recommendations, said that Justice Muirhead’s commitment to justice was unmistakable.

“The judge’s reputation for fairness was unsurpassed,” Commissioner Dillon said.

“I am saddened to hear the news of his passing, because he was a man of honour who performed an enormous service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

“I hope his family takes comfort in the knowledge that Justice Muirhead’s name will always be held in the highest respect in Indigenous communities.”
