Press Release Ref: 434 Published: 18/7/2001 Title: Queanbeyan wins Major Defence Project

The announcement that the Australian Defence Forces’ Headquarters Australian Theatre (HQAST) is to be located in Queanbeyan heralds a major boost to the region, Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, said today.

Gary Nairn was commenting following the announcement by the Minister for Defence, Peter Reith, in Queanbeyan this morning.

“This is wonderful news and will be welcomed by everyone in the region,” he said.

“Headquarters Australian Theatre will mean an investment of up to $150 million and an ongoing workforce of up to 1000 people.

“That means a huge boost to the construction industry over the next couple of years plus yearly salaries in the tens of millions of dollars,” Gary Nairn explained.

“I also understand that up to 250 jobs will be created in construction and related communication and information technology work.

“The announcement today is the culmination of much planning by the Department of Defence.

“It is also the culmination of a campaign I started with the then Minister for Defence, Ian McLachlan, back in 1996,” Gary Nairn added.

Gary Nairn also paid tribute to the Queanbeyan Mayor, Frank Pangallo, and the Taskforce he established to help attract Federal Government facilities to Queanbeyan.

“The taskforce provided timely information on available sites for this complex and their support has been greatly appreciated by me and Minister Reith,” Gary Nairn concluded.
