Third annual Australian Fisheries and Seafood Forum

Seafood leaders from across the country will converge on Brisbane tomorrow (17 November) for the third annual Australian Fisheries and Seafood Forum.

Forum host, Australian Fisheries Minister Senator Eric Abetz, said it would provide a valuable opportunity to sit down with industry and discuss what needs to be done to ensure Government policy remains up-to-date and relevant.

“This year’s forum has attracted participants from across the seafood industry, and will include Commonwealth and State fishers, aquaculturists, processors and industry bodies as well as fisheries managers and policy-makers,” he said.

“Two particular issues I want to cover are the opportunities for the seafood industry arising from the Government’s free trade agreement (FTA) agenda, as well as a range of workforce and skills issues.

“We are already seeing the benefits to the industry from FTAs with the US and Thailand, and I will be encouraging the seafood industry to work together with the Government in developing negotiating positions for the FTAs currently under negotiation and those being considered.

“The success of the Australian economy, and the nation’s record low unemployment rate, has also led to a shortage of labour in some parts of the country, and the Government is eager to work with industry on solutions.”

The Third Australian Fisheries and Seafood Forum will be held in Brisbane, on Friday 17 November 2006.

The forum, which arose from the 2003 fisheries policy review Looking to the Future, A Review of Commonwealth Fisheries Policy, provides an opportunity for industry to give the Australian Government first-hand advice on recent or emerging issues.
