Students and staff at St Mary’s School in Ararat will benefit from an Australian Government grant of $150,000 for an upgrade of external playground areas, Federal Member for Wannon, David Hawker, said today.

Mr Hawker said that the grant will be used to construct new playground spaces incorporating artistic designs developed by the St Mary’s students.

St Mary’s School principal, Mr Tony Perkins, said that while the school had been upgraded internally over the past few years, the outside playground area was in desperate need of modernising.

“These new playground spaces have been partially designed by the students and incorporate their artwork. They will be safer, more functional and, importantly, more stimulating for the students,” Mr Perkins said.

Mr Hawker said that these new facilities will help the school to provide the best possible learning environment for its students.

“The Australian Government’s Capital Grants Programme for Schools has a particular focus on improving the learning outcomes of educationally disadvantaged students.

“This project involves a significant amount of funding, which is an indication of the importance the Government places on developing and maintaining school infrastructure, and maximising opportunities for young people in the region,” he said.
