Government again fails the Reserves.

Government Again Fails The Reserves

Laurie Ferguson - Shadow Minister for Defence Science and Personnel

Media Statement - 18 February 2000

Evidence this morning to a Parliamentary Committee shows the Government has not even managed to pay reservists returning from East Timor their full entitlements.

Shadow Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, Laurie Ferguson MP, says this latest revelation is further evidence that the Government has failed the Reserves.

'It is bad enough that the Government has removed award protection for Defence leave, has failed to protect reservists' civil employment and only met half of last year's recruitment target for the Reserves,' Mr Ferguson said.

'Now we find that the Coalition cannot even ensure that reservists are paid their full entitlements in a timely fashion. This is appalling.

'Yesterday Department Secretary Dr Allan Hawke publicly confirmed what the Opposition has been saying for months about the state of the Defence portfolio under this Government.

'It is about time Ministers Moore and Scott accepted accountability for their own performance.

'Where is their promised clear and public plan for the future of the Reserves? Where is their promised call out legislation? Why do they keep stalling on doing something about civil employment protection? Why can't they persuade Cabinet to reintroduce Defence leave as an allowable award matter?'
