Mortlake’s Aimee Walmsley will spend the next three days debating issues on faith and values with aspiring young leaders from around Australia at the 10th National Student Leadership Forum in Canberra.

Aimee was selected and sponsored by our local Federal Member for Wannon, David Hawker, to attend the Forum, which aims to give one generation of leaders the opportunity to make a personal investment in the next generation.

Aimee was chosen for demonstrating a spark of leadership in her community, and her willingness to discuss leadership from the perspective of faith and values.

Mr Hawker said every year the Forum has around 200 young people attend from varied backgrounds and demographics.

“We find that this diversity enriches the participants’ time significantly,” he said.

Today Mr Hawker met with Aimee and a small group of participants in the Speaker’s office at Parliament House.

“The Forum gives elected representatives like me the opportunity to talk with aspiring young leaders about the dynamics of effective leadership. I personally gain a great deal of encouragement from this occasion,” Mr Hawker said.

“It helps us to remember the values and ideals that motivated us to serve through leadership in the first place, and participants usually find it to be a rewarding and inspiring experience.”

Mr Hawker said the Forum’s Parliamentary Hosts come from all sides of politics but are united by a common belief that young aspiring leaders hold our country’s future in their hands.

“We hope in some small way to encourage young people like Aimee to believe it’s possible to make a difference in this world through serving others,” he said.
