Press Release Ref: 816 Published: 1/10/2002 Title: $1,548 to replace fire damaged Nethercote Honour Roll

The Nethercote Residents Association will replace the Nethercote Roll of Honour with the help of a $1,548 grant under the Federal Government’s Saluting Their Service commemorations program.

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, said the funding had been approved by the Minister for Veterans Affairs, Danna Vale.

“The Federal Government encourages the community to remember and honour the contribution made by Australians who have served in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations since Federation,” Mr Nairn said.

“The original Nethercote Roll of Honour was destroyed by fire. The new honour roll will be based on the design of the original.

“The Government is encouraging communities throughout Eden-Monaro and around the country to restore their memorials or to build new ones, where none exists.

“This project will provide a fitting tribute to the district’s servicemen and women.

“The Nethercote Residents Association is to be congratulated on its initiative and I am pleased the Minister has been able to lend the Government’s support,” Mr Nairn said.

Since the launch of the commemorations program in 1997, nearly $46 million in grants to some 3,000 ex-service and community organisations have been approved.

Projects supported have included the restoration and construction of community war memorials, displays of wartime memorabilia and commemoration of significant wartime anniversaries.
