Glyphosate dumping decision welcomed

Australia’s farmers are no longer threatened by a possible increase in prices for glyphosate, which is an important farming aid, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Warren Truss, said today.

“A competitive market for glyphosate is vital to ensure that the best price is available for Australian farmers,” Mr Truss said.

Mr Truss was responding to today’s decision by the Minister for Justice and Customs, Senator Chris Ellison, not to apply dumping duty on imported glyphosate from China.

The decision follows Minister Ellison considering evidence provided by a Customs anti-dumping investigation.

“Glyphosate is an important farm aid and a significant farm input cost,” Mr Truss said. “Many industries in Australia are reliant on glyphosate as an aid for conservation tillage and they were concerned that dumping duties would increase prices to farmers.

“This would have had an adverse affect on farm costs.

“Australian farmers are major exporters and compete with producers from around the world so it is vital that they have the same competitive advantage in accessing glyphosate.”

The investigation, which began after an application from Monsanto on 12 June 2001, found that the negligible volumes of glyphosate from China that had been dumped had not caused material injury to Australian industry.

The Customs investigation included inviting Chinese producers and exporters to make submissions addressing the issue of price control.

During the investigation Customs received submissions from 17 members of the Australian industry producing glyphosate and importers of Chinese glyphosate.

Customs also received submissions from six producers and exporters of Chinese glyphosate.
