MEDIA RELEASE Senator the Hon. Sandy Macdonald Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence Deputy Leader of The Nationals in the Senate PARLSEC 079/2006 Monday 14 August 2006

Personnel from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) will make the move from barracks to chambers when they experience life in Parliament House this week as part of the ADF Parliamentary Exchange Program.

Thirteen personnel from a Private in the Army to a Navy Commander and two Air Commodores in the Air Force will be exposed to the daily decision-making processes faced by Members and Senators.

Their task will be to return with a greater understanding of the mechanics of all levels of government during the week-long ‘tour of duty’.

“Parliamentarians and ADF members work in very different, but unique environments and this is a great opportunity to exchange an appreciation and understanding of these differences,” Parliamentary Secretary to Minister for Defence Senator Sandy Macdonald said.

“This program allows ADF personnel to gain a valuable insight into both parliamentary and committee processes.”

“The majority of Members and Senators who have nominated to sponsor an ADF member have participated in the ADF Parliamentary Program where they were attached to an ADF unit to experience the day-to-day lives and work of our sailors, soldiers and aircrews,” Senator Macdonald said.

ADF personnel will be attached to the following parliamentarians:

Navy: Commander Ray Saad Mr Alan Cadman MP

Commander Scott Ritchie Mr Phil Baressi MP

Commander Dave Hargan Senator Joe Ludwig

Lieutenant Chloe Wilson Mr Chris Bowen MP

Army: Major Andy Weir Mr David Fawcett MP

Major Todd Ashurst Senator Steve Hutchins
