TOURIST ATTRACTION GOING THROUGH THE ROOF In the 1930s, the Junee flour mill played a major part in the town’s industrial progress. Now, after being almost destroyed by fire, the once derelict building is again a local landmark as a premier tourist attraction.

The building is now home to Green Grove Organics, which produces its famous organic licorice, together with a new range of chocolate-coated products such as macadamia nuts, ginger, almonds and sultanas.

At a function today at the company’s premises, The Nationals Member for Riverina Kay Hull representing the Minister for Small Business and Tourism, Fran Bailey, congratulated Green Grove Organics on their contribution to tourism and officially opened the Through the Roof tours in the licorice factory section of the mill.

Mrs Hull said the project was supported with an Australian Government $75,000 Tourism Program grant.

“The Through the Roof tour winds its way through the factory via catwalks. Large roof windows allow visitors a close-up view of production and the Green Room affords an opportunity to see licorice plants growing,” Mrs Hull said.

“The tour also includes a theatrette where tourists can see organic farming and its production process. The Café de Mill provides visitors with an opportunity to taste and buy the unique licorice and chocolate products, as well offering fine food.

“Visitors can also enter the Hall of De Fame for a display on the history of organics and Junee, and read a brief history of wheat, flour and bread production in Australia.”

Mrs Hull said Green Grove Organic founder Alan Druce was regarded as one of the premier organic test cases in Australia.

“Increasing visitor numbers to our tourism businesses is vital as it helps to boost the local economy by creating extra jobs. It also generates additional income for small business operators which depend on good tourism numbers to succeed,” Mrs Hull said.

“Since the inception of the new Australian Tourism Development Program which was part of the Tourism White Paper, 92 projects worth more than $14 million have been funded under the program.

“Tourism is vital to our economy. It is a $73 billion industry, employing more than half a million Australians and about 48 cents in every tourism dollar is spent in regional Australia.”
