$100,000 for Kerang’s St Joseph’s School

Students and staff at St Joseph’s School in Kerang will benefit from an Australian Government grant of $100,000 for a new building project, John Forrest, The Nationals Federal Member for Mallee announced today from Canberra.

Mr Forrest said the grant would be used for the refurbishment of staff room amenities and the conversion of a existing room to provide reading recovery and resource room.

“The new facilities will help the school to provide the best possible learning environment for students at the school,” said Mr Forrest.

Mrs Lesleigh Madden, Principal of St Joseph’s School said they were very thankful for the funding. “We are very appreciative of these government funds which will enable us to undertake this $150,000 project. The school community will be contributing $50,000 toward this project which will contribute to the ongoing improvements to our school,” said Mrs Madden.

Mr Forrest congratulated the school community on their commitment toward the project. “It is always heartening to see the dedication of school communities, there is no doubt that many school building projects would not take place without it,” said Mr Forrest.

“This project involves a significant amount of government funding - an indication of the importance the Government places on developing and maintaining school infrastructure.”

“The Australian Government will provide an estimated $33 billion in direct funding to schools and school students over the period 2005-2008. A key element of this funding package is some $2.7 billion for school capital works and infrastructure projects over the

next four years, including an additional $1 billion committed in 2004.”

“This demonstrates the Government’s continued commitment to a strong and effective school system, maximising the opportunities for young Australians,” concluded Mr Forrest.
