The Howard government’s latest Medicare package should be re-named Medishonk, Cunningham MP Michael Organ said today.

“All Australians deserve access to quality health care regardless of their capacity to pay and the Greens condemn the Government for undermining the principle of universality by failing to propose measures to increase bulk billing for all Australians”, Mr. Organ said.

“We also strongly disagree with the Government’s proposal to rely on safety nets in place of strengthening Medicare. Their so-called safety net is full of holes, and lots of Australians will fall through it.”

“The Government should increase the patient rebate for all Australians, and develop a plan to promote bulk billing as an essential means of ensuring timely, affordable access to primary health care.”

“The Howard Government has been running down Medicare since it came to office.”

“This is simply their latest attempt to con the Australian people that they care about access to health care”, Mr. Organ said,
