Democrats field Muslim candidate for Forde

Queensland Democrat Senator Andrew Bartlett campaigned today with the Democrats’ candidate for Forde, Mr Maaz Syed.

Mr Syed is one of five Muslim candidates contesting this election for the Democrats

Mr Syed holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Middle East Technical University, Turkey, a Masters Degree in Software Development from Griffith University and Masters Degree in Engineering from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He has been working as an aeronautical engineer within the Australian defence industry over the past five years.

“Maaz Syed has put himself up as a candidate because he passionately wants to make a difference in the lives of the people of Forde and to contribute in a public way to his adopted country,” Senator Bartlett said.

“Maaz is a highly qualified and community spirited person who would do his upmost for the electorate. He is passionate about health, education and promoting the benefits of multiculturalism”

Mr Syed said that “Since coming to Australia, I have found the people to be wonderful and generous. Australia is a really great country and I want to take this opportunity to contribute in way that gives back some of what I’ve received since coming here.”

Mr Syed said that the decision to support the Democrats was not a difficult one. He had noticed that over the years the Democrats and Senator Andrew Bartlett particularly were prominent supporters of human rights.

“The Democrats are the only party to consistently speak out about social injustice and defend human rights, including the rights of indigenous people”.

“I am campaigning for the people of Forde and want to see them have a chance at having access to better public health care and quality education. I’m also very keen to promote the benefits Australian Muslims can bring to Australia.

“I’m hoping to build some bridges during my campaign and foster harmony and peace between cultures,” Mr Syed concluded.
