Stephen Smith Misleads The House

In Question Time today Labor’s spokesman for Workplace Relations, Stephen Smith misled the House.

In a question to the Prime Minister, the Member for Perth claimed to be quoting Professor Ian Harper, Chair of

the Australian Fair Pay Commission:

I also refer the Prime Minister to the comment last night on the ABC Lateline programme by, that the

Government’s legislation and I quote, ‘pushes the Low Pay Commission to reduce the minimum wage in

real terms.’

Professor Harper made no such comment.

Stephen Smith has invented the quote.

Ever since The Australian ran the article, “Labor MPs, unions want Smith off IR” (5/5/06), he has engaged in a

frenzied effort to be seen to be muscling-up to the Government.

This behaviour today is a symptom of Stephen Smith’s desperation to please the union bosses who are

demanding Kim Beazley dump him from the portfolio because of his lame performance.
